- Using any computer and web browser, locate the web site for this course at: http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/swarfiel/MUH3633/3633home.html ("Bookmark" or add this course home page to your "Favorites" to enable easy access in the future on your own computer).
- Find the link to the course SYLLABUS on that page. READ the entire syllabus to make sure that you understand what this course entails, your obligations and my expectations.
- Once you have completed these tasks, send an email from your "knightsmail" account" to me at: scott.warfield@ucf.edu. Make sure that your email does or includes all of the following:
- Uses a subject header that includes "MUH 3633". (Messages without this information will be ignored.)
- In the message, explain that you have read and understand the syllabus.
- At the end of the message, include a full name signature. (Messages without this information will be ignored.)
- NB. Failure to complete this simple assignment, i.e., to answer all questions and sign your email, before the Monday (13 January 2020) class meeting (beginning at 10:30 am) will result in you being marked absent for all classes from that point forward until you follow these instructions and complete this assignment.
- For WEDNESDAY, acquire your own copy of the textbook, anthology and recordings.
- For WEDNESDAY, read Crawford, "Preface" (xvi-xix), "Introduction" (pp. 1-17), and be prepared to discuss it in class.
- For WEDNESAY & FRIDAY (and beyond), begin reading Crawford, Part One, Chapter 1 (pp. 18-40). In particular, note the following in your reading:
- Who are the primary individuals (and groups) who make, use and consume music?
- Where (both general geographic and specific locales), when (rough dates), and why do they make music?
- What is the sound of their music like? (using proper technical terminology)?
- Make sure you listen to recorded items (identified with listening guides) and look at any illustrations and other supporting items.
